Sagaing was an ancient capital of the Burmese Kingdom, but today people visit the Sagaing Hill to see the golden and white pagodas dotted along the hill. The area is very foggy, so views from a distance of the hill aren’t great, but some of the pagodas are worth seeing.
Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda
This was my second time visiting this pagoda. It’s located near the top of the hill and was built in 1312. The pagoda itself is covered with mirrored glass, and you can see views of the surrounding area from the pagoda area.
U Min Thonze Cave
There are 45 buddhas inside a crescent shaped structure below a small pagoda on Sagaing Hill. Definitely can get some cool photos from inside the “cave.”
Sitagu Buddhist Academy
The Buddhist Academy has a unique pagoda like dome that can be seen from viewpoints of Sagaing Hill. When I visited, I snuck into the center of the dome because two women who had a key were inside. The Academy offers undergraduate and graduate level Buddhist training for monks, nuns, and laypersons.
